This awareness and advocacy campaign is built on a foundation of research. Dozens of consumers have expressed their frustration after receiving unexpected and unwarranted bills for services on the water. In many cases, they were unaware of how much these services would cost until after assistance had already been provided. With almost one million registered boats in Florida, it is important for consumers to understand the costs for services beforehand so that they can make an informed decision.

According to a recent survey of Florida boat owners, we learned that:

  • More than 60% of Florida boat owners have purchased a membership with a maritime salvage and towing company
  • Approximately 54% of those boat owners who had purchased a membership said that they have used their membership in the past
  • Almost four out of five boat owners believe that maritime salvage and towing companies should be required to provide a cost estimate before providing assistance to a boat
